Creativity

Creativity - A word we use in many contexts. There  creativity in anything we perform the way each person does in his or her daily life even in a simple activity of folding clothes after the laundry. Each person does it in his or her way and places it in the closet to suit their needs. This creates a pattern or habit for that person. It maybe labeled as systematic or neat or perfect folding or orderly.

Creativity is subjective and does not require a special skill, it is to do things differently to achieve a satisfaction to the person concerned. This  may need more space, patience and perseverence.
What is creativity for a person with Downs Syndrome?
Once we remove the letters D I S from the word Disability and view this persons activity one will find the creativity in them.
Focus - Once they are into an activity they are focused and cannot move out till it is completed. A mundane act of keeping the shoes on the shoe rack is as important as organizing a workstation.
If he takes time in doing an act we say he takes ages but we fail to see the beauty and orderliness in the completed job.

Distraction - A person  who is in the act of creativity when disturbed he gets distracted.  How much the distraction can interfere with day to day activities impacts the quality of life in a person, his relationships and social life.
The thought process cannot be re-activated  immediately after disruption. This is true in some kids who are gifted and talented who may be called 2E (twice exceptional , have a sensory or autistic challenge in addition to their giftedness).
Many persons with Down Syndrome are meticulous in their activity and perfection is their motto as compared to time taken to complete a job. When a person is in a hurry to get out they do not see the disorganized papers on the table but this person has to put it in order before stepping out. How this is perceived as a habit depends on the environment of the person.
Patience is the motto for person with persons with disability to do a satisfying job.
We are running a race to earn our living and to meet commitments to our family and friends due to the growing lack of social support in our communities.
This reminds me of a line in poem I read as a ten year old " There is no time to stand stare at the beauty " when times and demands were different.

When a decision was made for the relocation of  the person with Downs Syndrome his parents found away to engage him in some creative activity to keep him busy.As he had some training in weaving earlier he learnt the nuances  of  using a rigid heddle loom for handloom weaving in a short time and  his trainer appreciated his work and especially his selection of colour combinations.

He enjoys weaving at his own pace for a few hours a day and thanks to his parents who help him to prepare the warp for his projects and to his relatives, friends who encourage him by purchasing his scarfs for gifts.
Thus a hobby can evolve into an occupation and Raghu's creations was born.
Here are a few of his creations.
