Transition

Transition a process of changing from one state or condition to another. It can be age related, location, lifestyle changes, education or career changes.

What it means to a person with special needs is something I like to ponder on this blog.
A young man with Downs syndrome was resettled from a South Asian environment to
the Western scenario on relocation of the aged parents.

The country was not entirely strange to him as he had visited the country for holidays several times earlier.
Language - He could understand basic English but the accent and speed was too much for his comprehension . He had to learn to converse in English while the child in the household was learning to converse in the mother tongue.
This confused him.
Restricted mobility  - Apartment life with public transport and freedom to move in and out was different to living in an independent house with dependency for transport. Activities had to be scheduled around transport availability which gave fewer opportunities for social interaction.
Weather -The change in seasons is a new experience for him as his earlier visits were brief.
During transition from warm to cold weather imposed a challenge in terms wearing layers of clothing. In his  home country, with warm weather year round  he used to wear only a single cotton layer. The need to wear many layers when stepping outside and stay indoors due to cold was frustrating for him.
Time management -  The change from regular routine in helping in household chores and attending a vocational unit to a day without a specific  work schedule was a little unnerving for him. He was trying to find a way to fill his day with household chores and outdoor activities.
Circle of friends - Creating a friends circle in a new environment is a challenge for a person who has speech and language issues.

We could not find answers to satisfy all his  questions  and to make him comprehend the reality of his situations. It is an uphill task for him and the people around him to make him feel at home.
We believe a concerted effort from family and friends will make life easier for the changes faced by the person with special needs.
In order to make the transition easier specific household activities on a regular basis, creating projects using his skill in weaving and outdoor  activities as part of his social activities were created for him.
We hope soon he will call this environment his new home.
Raghu's Creations was born in this transition.

Keep following the blog to learn more about the creations. Until next time Adios! 😃
